Republican Party’s Extreme Platform is Out of Touch with Florida and the Country

The following statement can be attributed to Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida:

“With the Republican National Convention unfolding in our backyard, we held out hope that pro-equality voices might temper the more extreme discriminatory elements within the GOP. Instead we witnessed first hand the Republican Party embrace a stunningly hostile platform that would be disastrous for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, our children and all women everywhere. Even as a bi-partisan organization that has worked with both sides of the aisle for over 15 years, Equality Florida is compelled to speak out.

The Republican Party seeks to erase existing marriages of same-sex couples and block any future progress by amending the US Constitution. The GOP would also reinstate the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy that forced gay troops to hide in order to serve. It even seeks to block efforts to prevent gays and lesbians from being persecuted in Africa.

The Republican anti-abortion platform takes the most intimate decision of whether to have a baby away from women and gives it to the government. Shockingly the platform contains no exceptions for rape or incest or to protect the health of a woman.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who led the Republican Party’s platform committee, recently referred to the platform as a ‘blueprint for how the Republican Party wants government to work.’  As poll after poll now shows, a majority of Americans support marriage equality and as voters wake up to the freedom being taken away from women, Equality Florida is confident that this extremist ‘blueprint’ is not how America wants government to work.”

Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
