Moments ago Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis) was sworn in as the first openly gay United States Senator.

Baldwin was first elected as the first woman to represent Wisconsin in the US House in 1998. Today, she made history again by becoming the first openly gay person elected to the US Senate.

Senator Baldwin is not the only LGBT official being sworn into Congress today. Six LGBT people will be sworn into the House of Representatives today, marking several historic firsts. They include:

  • Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona. She will be the first openly bisexual member of Congress.
  • Sean Patrick Maloney from New York. Sean is the first gay congressman from New York.
  • Jared Polis from Colorado. Polis just won re-election and is the first openly LGBT parent in Congress.
  • Mark Takano from California will be the first openly LGBT person of color.
  • Mark Pocan from Wisonsin. Pocan ran for the seat Tammy Baldwin vacated while running for Senate. This marks the first time a district elected two LGBT people consecutively.
  • David Cicilline from Rhode Island, former Mayor of Providence.
