June 27, 2013

Orlando's gay community and its supporters will hold a "Marriage Equality Rally" celebrating U.S. Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage at 7 p.m. today at Lake Eola Park.

The event will include speakers on the court's decision that the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutionally denied legally married gay couples federal benefits.

Among those scheduled to speak are U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, Equality Florida President Nadine Smith, state Reps. Joe Saunders and Linda Stewart and Orlando Gay Parents.

Red luminary candles will be placed around Lake Eola to reflect the struggles for gay rights.

The event is being sponsored by Come Out With Pride Orlando, the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, the Human Rights Campaign, Equality Florida, Watermark magazine and the ACLU.
