Jacksonville Volunteer Information

In Jacksonville, we know that someone has been fired from their job just because of who they love, not because of their talent or skill. We know that LGBT couples working to start a family have been denied housing because of who they are. Transgender people have been asked to leave restaurants, nail salons and other public spaces simply for being their authentic selves.

The campaign to pass a fully-inclusive Human Rights Ordinance is in full swing! Equality Florida and our local partners with the Jacksonville Coalition for Equality have been working on passing an HRO to protect the LGBT community for many years. So far we’ve collected over 20,000 pledges in support of an HRO for Jacksonville and passed an LGBT-inclusive HRO in Atlantic Beach.

We have a  team of organizers and local volunteers to bring this campaign home by the end of the year - but we still need more support to get it done.

We are calling for all hands on deck! We have several opportunities from which anyone can get involved. From community events to phone banking, canvassing to data entry, we have something for everyone and there is much to do:

Testimonials:

Phone Banking - “Phone banking is great because mostly the people I speak to are supportive but had no idea what was going on. It felt good to educate someone who cares and give them a chance to participate in the democratic process. Plus the free pizza!” -Garrett

Canvassing - “I like volunteering with Equality Florida because they have so many goals and many options for someone like me to choose from. Canvassing is my favorite because I like being able to directly speak with a voter about the HRO.” - Glenn

Data Entry - “I’m a behind the scenes kind of person so I like taking care of the back of the house items. Plus it’s easy.” - Tiffany

Community Events - “One Spark was exciting! There were so many people and our booth looked so snazzy. Walking up to festival goers, talking to them about the HRO and passing out stickers was really fun. That’s how they got me to sign up to volunteer.” - Denise
