The Herald recommends: State Senate District 35
They are two-term former North Miami mayor Kevin Burns, a business consultant, and veteran legislator and former Miami-Dade County commissioner Gwen Margolis. Mr. Gelber leaves big shoes to fill. A thoughtful legislator who fought for better public schools and to protect the environment, among other things, Mr. Gelber suited this Northeast Miami-Dade district's residents.
Experience Ms. Margolis certainly has, including being Florida's first female Senate president.
But Mr. Burns, 51, has a refreshing people-friendly approach to governing and proved to be an innovative local leader. As mayor of a city hard hit by foreclosures, and facing one himself, he had a lead role in convincing Miami-Dade County courts to establish a mortgage-foreclosure diversion program in 2008 so families could stay in their homes.
Mr. Burns will carry on Mr. Gelber's progressive agenda. For Florida Senate District 35, Democratic primary, The Miami Herald recommends KEVIN BURNS.
