For the first time, the U.S. Census Bureau will include married same-sex spouses as part of its decennial count of American households and families.

This information, along with counts of unmarried same-sex partners that the Census has reported previously, will help produce a more accurate picture of LGBT people and our families in federal data. These data can play a crucial role in making the case for LGBT equality, as they can affect a range of policy and social service decisions.
