PRIMARY ELECTIONS ARE TUESDAY SEPT. 1st

DON'T FORGET TO GO VOTE

EQUALITY FLORIDA ACTION PAC

Your vote could decide if St. Petersburg's anti-gay mayor is replaced by a pro-equality champion or someone with an even more homophobic record than the incumbent.

The fourth largest city in the state will be run by either a successful businessman and LGBT supporter -- Scott Wagman, or an anti-gay former City Council Member -- Bill Foster, who fought hard against sexual-orientation protections in the city's Human Rights Ordinance.

You decide Tuesday, Sept. 1st. Go Vote.

Openly gay city council candidate Steve Kornell is leading the pack with more money and more endorsements than his opponents. If elected, he would be the first openly gay city council member ever in St. Petersburg.

  • In particular, we support qualified, openly LGBT candidates who can bring a vital perspective and much-needed voice to the political debates that impact our lives.

This ridiculous headline has now caused quite a problem since Wagman has not advanced beyond the primary. Will it not lead people to believe there is not a candidate to support in the general election in November? Will Kathleen Ford not be endorsed because she did not score 100% on the candidate questionaire? Why don't you show us the answers provided by the candidates to this questionaire? Well now it's the bible thumper homophobe (Foster) against an excellent candidiate who supports gay rights, Kathleen Ford. How about Equality Florida does not bite off its nose to spite its face, recognizes its mistake and supports Ford so we can make some headway in this city? In other words get your act together Equality Florida!

The alternative LGBT ticket:

ST. PETERSBURG MAYOR
Kathleen Ford

ST. PETERSBURG COUNCIL MEMBER

DISTRICT 4
Pamella Settlegoode

DISTRICT 5
Joe Smith (Sorry this is too late to help Joe) or Steve Kornell

DISTRICT 6
Vel Thompson or Karl Nurse

District 8
Leonard E. Schmiege

This ticket comes too late for today's election, but please give it some thought for the runoff.

The Equality Florida endorsement made sense based on interviews and candidate efforts to court gay voters. It missed the historic opportunity to help bring a revolution to city hall. A revolution in many ways. How?
Replace the white male power structure with a diverse group that looks more like the city they represent and shake loose the old good old boy network. Elect a government that is independent of the few wealthy donors and business interests that have stifled creative thought.
Build a coalition of labor unions, grass roots neighborhood groups and progressive organizations that will be strong when we need them.

The problem with the Equality slate is that it will be perceived as pitting gay and LGBT Champion candidates against black candidates, and it aligns with the political establishment. After a century of being locked out of government new council districts helped elect 2 black council members. Karl Nurse was appointed to fill one of those spots, leaving only one black member. Its not Karl's fault that he was the most qualified of the applicants, but a bitterness remains in black precincts. Instead of being drawn into an artificial division why not build bridges to the black community? Joe and Vel are newcomers to politics, fresh with enthusiasm and neighborhood support. They can bring a leadership accountable to the people and not the Republican money machine. Money has bought black leadership in line with the right wing of the republican party. Wagman said his #2 choice for mayor was Ken Welch, the same county commissioner who tried to block tourist tax money from promoting our county in gay publications. This issue played out in a front page story on the supposed hostility between gay and black leadership. The Rousons were big Jeb supporters. Money is behind much of the "conservatism" of black politicians. The lopsided black vote for Amendment 2 might not have happened had the gay community taken the first step in reaching out.

Mel Sembler and the Republican party have run city government for too long. Votes to ban street newspaper sales and give our sidewalk to Baywalk show their power and an absence of understanding of civil and human rights by the incumbents.

Only 2 mayors in many decades have had any independence from the downtown power structure. Charlie Schuh and Ed Cole. A recent news story about Schuh's late mother tells of Schuh being expelled from the democratic party because he supported woman's rights. Cole opposed building the Dome without a vote from the people.
They were limited by a strong status quo council majority.

Gay voters need more than a Pride resolution and parade. As important as these signs of respect can be, all working families have common needs. Safe streets, rights at work, affordable homes, honest government, justice.
