WFLA Homophobic TV Program: Help Decide the Next Steps

How Should We Hold WFLA Accountable for Homophobic Programming?

Protest at the studio? Reach out to advertisers? Boycott?

Over the past few days we've gotten tons of email from our members suggesting next steps as our community responds to the airing of the reckless, homophobic program on WFLA in Tampa.

This has become a statewide and nationwide issue as anti-gay extremists shop this hateful infomercial around. Many have rejected the program as blatantly and dangerously bigoted. Others, including Tampa's NBC affiliate have cashed the $35,000 check without a concern for the harm inflicted on the gay community.

More than 1,800 of our supporters have contacted the station condemn the airing of the program "Silencing the Christians".

The St. Petersburg Times took WFLA to task in a strong editorial.

WFLA is hoping we will move on to other issues so they can go back to business as usual.

What do you say?

Help Decide the next steps in responding to WFLA's anti-gay programming.

The results of our survey will be discussed on our Statewide Online Town Hall, Thursday, July 9th at 6:30 p.m. Complete the survey and you'll automatically recieve the details on how to join us Thusday night.

I wonder if the disclaimer at the end would have been enough to prevent leagal action if this was an infomercial for the american Nazi party or the KKK?

One other thing we should also keep in mind was that WFLA was paid to air the special, and opted to carry through with airing it. With some media companies hurting and teetering towards bankruptcy (including Media General, parent company of the Tampa Tribune and WFLA), practically any money is good money, and Standards and Practices are out the window. I won't be surprised if another station out there airs an infomercial from the KKK, a "militia" group, or even an Islamic extremist group.

It's times like these that we wished that we still had the fairness doctrine and the old-fashioned NAB Television Code.

Now the question is -- would WFLA air a rebuttal from EF, or another gay activist group? Personally, if they did accept it, it would prove that WFLA was in the money, by carrying the AFA show. But if they refuse to air the rebuttal, then they're in big trouble.

Sorry to disagree, but these are not ridicules accusations on our part. The time of coddling hate groups and media companies that allow defaming, inflammatory programming has to end.

If it wasn’t for the actions of The Stonewall patrons in 1969 gay bars would still be raided on a regular basis. If not for organizations like ACT UP with their loud, vocal, and yes then radical stand in the 80’s, PWA would still be treated like subhuman beings. Nothing will change until we in the LGBT community coalesce, follow the lead of organizations like Equality, GLAAD, ACT UP, and say NO to living like second class citizens.

If we continue to berate this TV station we will become guilty of the ridiculous accusations made against us in the program we are so up in arms about. We want the religious right to listen to what we have to say. They get just as upset as we do when there are pro gay TV programs. Let's be the bigger party and allow them to have their say.

I agree with Anonymous. I think WFLA/Media General's management should be invited July 9. The lgbt community should settle for nothing less than an apology and a detailed explanation on how this will not happen again. Diversity training as well as equal air-time for a program on lgbt issues would be welcomed too. Also, it would be nice if other minority groups would be invited to stand with the lgbt community on this.
