Incident involving gender-neutral eighth grader in FL prompts call for better training

In honor of Spirit Day, millions of people across the nation have gone purple today to show their support for LGBTQ youth and take a stand against bullying.

Statistically, we know LGBTQ youth face much higher rates of bullying and harassment in schools, and examples of such discrimination in Florida are often reported to Equality Florida.

Brief Overview:

Seizing on the growing momentum for transgender equality nationwide and across the state, Equality Florida launched TransAction Florida, a statewide initiative created to increase awareness of and to educate and promote complete equality for the transgender community, in December of 2014.

The launch of the initiative was announced soon after Miami-Dade County added gender identity or expression to their Human Rights Ordinance (HRO). The update to the HRO created a tipping point, and now just over 50% of Florida's population are currently protected from gender identity and expression discrimination via local policies. The launch also came at a time when a statewide bill was introduced in Tallahassee that would add gender identity and sexual orientation to the state’s nondiscrimination law.

“This is an important moment for the transgender community, one that has been too often the silent T in the LGBT movement,” said Gina Duncan, Equality Florida’s Transgender Inclusion Director. “This project reflects Equality Florida’s longstanding commitment to trans inclusion, and it recognizes the need for visible trans leadership at the forefront of this work.”
