Remembering Charlie Hounchell
With great sadness and continued shock, we share the tragic news that our friend and boardmember Charlie Hounchell died of a heart attack this past Sunday. He will be dearly missed.
Charlie and his partner, Stephen Gay, have been long-time supporters of Equality Florida, contributing their time, treasure, and talent to the important work of our organization. When asked three years ago, Charlie took on the additional commitment of serving on Equality Florida’s statewide Board of Directors.
Charlie was indeed a man who gave himself to many causes. He served as on numerous boards including, Chairman of The Spring of Tampa Bay, the Flordia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Hillsborough County Arts Council, Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, Chairman of the Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts, and many more. He was a true community leader.
Charlie was also a lawyer, real estate agent, and an astute businessman. He was a success by any measure.
And yet he understood that equality and justice are not inevitable, but they must be worked for and tirelessly defended by people who believed, like him, in the promise of a more fair and just future.
His commitment to this shared principle made him more than a leader and more than a success. It made him a role model who continues to serve all of us, young and old alike, as a shining example of a life so well lived.
We join with his family and friends in honoring Charlie in the sprit with which he lived at a
