NEWS RELEASE: Gala Energizes New Generation in the Fight for Equality in Gainesville

Gala Energizes New Generation in the Fight for Equality!

The Equality Florida Gala comes to Gainesville on May 4th.

[Gainesville] On Saturday, May 4th, Equality Florida will hold its annual Greater Gainesville Gala at the Florida Museum of Natural History from 7:00pm-9:30pm. Tickets are still available at

The 2013 Equality Florida Gala acts as a catalyst to bring more than 250 students, business leaders, elected officials and community members together in their support for equality.

“As we celebrate in the college town of Gainesville, we are reminded that the student generation is leading the way in their support for equality,“ says Stratton Pollitzer, Deputy Director for Equality Florida. “Over 70% of Floridians support equality – from students to our business leaders who know that valuing diversity and equality means good business and bright futures here in our state.”

The annual gala provides an opportunity to learn about the work Equality Florida is doing and helps fund efforts to make schools safe for LGBT students, end workplace discrimination, and gain legal protections for lesbian and gay couples and their children. Because of Equality Florida’s work, 64% of Florida students now attend schools with anti-bullying protections that specifically include sexual orientation, and 60% attend schools that specifically include gender identity protections as well.

Prominent Community leaders on the Honorary Host Committee this year include Gainesville City Commissioners Thomas Hawkins, Lauren Poe, Yvonne Hinson-Rawls, Susan Bottcher, Randy Wells; Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe; Alachua County Commissioners Mike Byerly and Robert Hutchinson and Alachua County School Board member Eileen Roy.

The program will include a "State of the State" address by Equality Florida’s Deputy Executive Director, Stratton Pollitzer, and a presentation of the Voice for Equality Award to Robert Prather for his involvement in working to pass pro-equality legislation and elect pro-equality leaders to all levels of government.

Tickets for this year’s event are $50 and can be purchased by visiting or calling 813-870-3735.

Equality Florida is committed to making our gala accessible to everyone.  A limited number of discounted tickets are reserved for students and guests experiencing financial hardship.  To request a discounted ticket email Michael Farmer at [email protected]

Equality Florida is the largest organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community.
