Pines considers extending domestic partner benefits to city employees

PEMBROKE PINES — The debate over domestic partner benefits in Pembroke Pines is about money, not equal rights, say commissioners.

Officials on Monday night held their first workshop to discuss extending domestic partner benefits to all city employees. The commissioners agree that cost is a concern, but some say that it shouldn't prevent the city from offering the benefits.

"It's certainly a question of finances," said Commissioner Iris Siple, who called for the workshop. "But that's not as important and becomes a secondary issue. What is important is fair and equal treatment for everyone."

Pines could join a growing list of 60 governmental agencies in Florida that offer domestic partner benefits. Domestic partners include same-sex couples and non-married straight partners who live together.
