State officials in Florida filed appeals Thursday to a federal court ruling that found the state’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples unconstitutional.
LGBT advocates and marriage equality proponents had urged Republican Gov. Rick Scott to leave the Aug. 21 ruling unopposed in court. With no appeal in the cases, Brenner v. Scott and Grimsley v. Scott, advocates had hoped same-sex couples would be able to marry in the state as soon as later this month.

For proponents of civil rights and marriage equality, the last year has been remarkably successful, though there have been some recent bumps in the road. A state court in Tennessee, for example, interrupted the winning streak last week, while the U.S. Supreme Court halted Virginia marriages that had been set to begin today.

BREAKING: Huge Development For The Freedom To Marry In Florida
UPDATE: (9/9/2014) Earlier this afternoon, Broward Circuit Judge Dale Cohen cancelled the Wednesday, September 10 hearing on the same sex divorce case. According to the judge's order, the Florida Attorney General was not properly informed to appeal the ruling. The plaintiff may refile their motion for a re-hearing.

Request to Take Up Marriage Case Sent to FL Supreme Court!
(August 27, 2014) Earlier today, the state's 2nd District Court of Appeal sent a request to the Florida Supreme Court asking them to take on a Hillsborough County marriage case and rule on the constitutionally of Florida's ban. If the Florida Supreme Court decides to take on the case, it will be a huge step forward in the fight for marriage in Florida.
