TRANSGENDER “SAFE HAVEN” TOWNS, CITIES AND COUNTIES
Over the last two decades, Equality Florida has worked to pass fully-inclusive Human Rights Ordinances across the state of Florida. Today, 40 local Human Rights Ordinances protect roughly 56% of Florida’s population due to our efforts and those of our local partners. These ordinances, create “Safe Haven” communities that protect transgender people from discrimination in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations. These protections have never been more important and lay the foundation for the passage of a statewide non-discrimination law, The Florida Competitive Workforce Act.
There are four current imperatives regarding these hard fought Human Rights Ordinances:
- Increase awareness of where these “Safe Haven”, Towns, Cities and Counties are located.
- Work together to pass fully inclusive ordinances in Jacksonville and other remaining municipalities that lack protections.
- Remain vigilant that these ordinances are never repealed or diluted.
- Leverage the 40 statewide Human Rights Ordinances to pass a statewide anti-discrimination law, The Florida Competitive Workforce Act.
Together, through increased awareness, engagement and activism, we can create a safe and inclusive Florida. Together we can create a Transgender “Safe Haven” State.
