Written by Carlos Guillermo Smith, Equality Florida's Public Policy Specialist On June 11th, we received some pretty incredible news when Governor Rick Scott signed HB 7013 into law, and finally put an end to the 1977 ban on gay adoption ruled unconstitutional by our courts. Thanks to openly-gay State Representative David Richardson, who spearheaded the amendment that added the repeal language to an otherwise unrelated adoption bill, we can finally put this issue to rest... hopefully.

Equality Florida stands today in mourning and in outrage at the murders of nine people inside their historic African-American church on Wednesday evening. It is a hate crime that has shocked the nation and claimed the lives of six women and three men, including State Senator Clementa Pinckney. Our hearts go out to their families, friends and the entire community reeling from this brutal act of terror.

Equality Florida's Black Lives Matter Statement Today is the 48th Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Loving v. Virginia decision that ended the ban on interracial marriages nationwide. It is a case invoked often in the arguments in favor of marriage equality.

Arriving at 11:45, I was a little nervous/anxious about volunteering, asking strangers to sign a petition supporting equal rights. I had never participated or even attended a civil rights event, so volunteering at one came from a place of genuine love, curiosity, and determination to overcome whatever micro-barriers might still exist within me internally.

This weekend Equality Florida was having fun in sun at Aqua Girl, the world’s largest charity event for women. In between killer DJ sets, amazing artistic performances and dips in the pool we engaged the crowd in the fight for full equality for all LGBT Floridians.

Historic voter mobilization secures Pro-Equality Majority on Jacksonville City Council Human Rights Campaign and Equality Florida rally more than 100,000 voters [Jacksonville] -- An historic mobilization of pro-equality voters in today’s run-off elections means a majority of the Jacksonville City Council are now on record in support of adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the city’s nondiscrimination law.

Equality Florida had a wonderful time at Charlotte County Pride last weekend! The event kicked off with a volunteer training on Friday in the beautiful Laishley Park. Our volunteers heard about Equality Florida’s work and practiced canvassing for the next day. We shared our stories, experiences, and prepared for a busy Saturday!

Written by Morgan Baker, Jacksonville Media Intern May has initiated a monstrous force of Get Out The Vote power! Phone banking kicked off on May 5th, with a strong team of 13 volunteers pitching in to call voters and recruit potential volunteers. At the Jacksonville EQFL headquarters, there was a dual phone bank consisting of two separate rooms with two very certain goals. One room was able to make over 120 calls and recruit 12 volunteer shifts.
