Same-sex couples delivered thousands of petitions to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office today asking her to reverse course on gay marriage. It’s been a week since Bondi appealed a Florida Keys judge’s ruling striking down the state’s same-sex marriage ban.

When Monroe County Circuit Judge Luis Garcia overturned Florida's 2008 constitutional gay-marriage ban and ordered that couples wishing to be married in Key West should be allowed to do so as early as this week, Attorney General Pam Bondi worked quickly to stamp out the ruling.

A county in Florida could join 17 states and the District of Columbia in allowing same sex marriage. Aaron Huntsman and William “Lee” Jones will be among the first in line for a marriage license.

Florida's ban on gay marriage was overturned Thursday by a judge in the Keys, the first ruling on a series of lawsuits aiming to legalize same-sex marriage.
