Equality Florida Applauds Charlie Crist for Commitment to Signing an Executive Order for LGBT Equality if Elected Governor

(St. Petersburg)- Equality Florida, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, applauds Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist for his announcement today regarding LGBT employees.

At a press conference today in St. Petersburg, Crist announced that if elected Governor, he will make January 6, 2015 a “First Day of Fairness” by signing five Executive Orders, including an Executive Order to “prohibit any form of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity within the state agencies or its contractors — because all Floridians should be equal in the eyes of the law.”

“We applaud Charlie Crist for taking a clear stand for equality and fairness in Florida,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. “Florida is at a critical moment in our struggle to end discrimination, and the next Governor stands to make a tremendous impact on the everyday lives of thousands of LGBT people in our state. It is clear that policies of nondiscrimination will also make Florida more economically competitive in the global marketplace.”

The Executive Order announced by Crist mirrors the Executive Order recently signed by President Obama. In it, the President prohibited discrimination against LGBT workers in all federal agencies or its contractors.

In June, the Equality Florida Action PAC, the state’s largest PAC dedicated to electing pro-LGBT candidates, endorsed Charlie Crist in the race for Governor.
